The Australian version of the LPN program
In the United States, licensed practical nurses complete a practical nursing program and work under registered nurses. Australia runs the same idea through a different system. Here the comparable role is the Enrolled Nurse, or EN, a nationally regulated position that sits between a nursing assistant and a Registered Nurse (RN).
The qualification that gets you there is the HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing, offered by TAFEs, universities and private providers in every state. It is the essential minimum requirement to register as an enrolled nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, with registration handled through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Without that registration you cannot work as an EN anywhere in the country.
The scope of practice is narrower than an RN's. Enrolled nurses administer medications, manage wound care, monitor patients and carry out nursing care plans, always under the supervision of a doctor or registered nurse. For many people that is exactly the appeal: a clinical career with real responsibility, reached in about a year and a half rather than a three-year degree.
What the course involves and what it costs
The Diploma of Nursing runs for roughly 18 months of full-time study, blending theory with supervised clinical placements in hospitals, aged care and community health settings. You learn to perform clinical assessments, contribute to nursing care for people with complex needs, administer and monitor medicines and IV therapy, and apply evidence to practice. The national curriculum includes units on wound management, legal and ethical nursing practice, and working with diverse communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural safety.
Employment prospects are strong. The Graduate Outcomes Survey found that four out of five nursing graduates land a job within three months of finishing, and enrolled nurses remain in consistent demand as aged care and community health services keep expanding.
Three things tend to trip up prospective students. The first is simply finding the right course, because searching "LPN program Australia" surfaces mostly American content. The search terms that actually work here are "Diploma of Nursing", "enrolled nurse course near me" and "enrolled nurse program [state]". The second is comparing costs, which vary sharply between subsidised, full-fee and international places. The third is entry itself, since providers set selection tasks and the NMBA sets a strict English language standard that catches many applicants off guard.
Because fees differ by state, provider and residency status, an enrolled nurse course can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to the mid-thirty-thousands. Here is how the main options line up.
| Study option | Typical provider | Length | Indicative cost | Best suited to | Strengths | Watch-outs |
|---|
| On campus | TAFE Queensland | 18 months | $14,250 concession; $16,425 subsidised; $26,475 full fee; $32,400–$33,600 international | School leavers and people who want structure | Scheduled clinical placements, direct registration pathway | Campus availability varies by region |
| Combination (online plus practical blocks) | TAFE NSW | 18 months | Reduced-cost places up to $4,970 for eligible students in some regions | Working adults and regional learners | Theory fits around a job | Practical blocks must be attended in person |
| University VET | RMIT | 18 months | Set by enrolment type and residency | Applicants planning a Bachelor of Nursing later | Simulation laboratories, credit toward a degree | Selection task and English evidence required |
For eligible domestic students, government subsidies and income-contingent loan arrangements can bring the upfront cost down considerably. Each state runs its own subsidised training list, so check what applies where you live before comparing providers.
Two students, two routes
Sarah, a single mother in Brisbane, needed a schedule that worked around school pickups. She chose the on-campus Diploma of Nursing at TAFE Queensland, using a subsidised place and spreading payments across her study. The structured placement timetable meant she always knew months ahead when she would be at the hospital, which made childcare planning manageable. She sat her final exams in mid-2026 and started an EN role in an aged care facility before the year was out.
Daniel took a different road. A retail manager in his late thirties from regional New South Wales, he could not relocate for study. He enrolled in the combination mode through TAFE NSW, completing theory online and travelling to campus for the practical blocks. The reduced-cost place he qualified for kept the financial hit modest. His advice to anyone in a similar position: confirm the practical block schedule before you enrol, because that determines everything else.
Both stories make the same point. Australia's LPN equivalent is not one rigid path. It bends around your life when you pick the right provider and funding option.
Your step-by-step starting plan
-
Check the English standard first. The NMBA requires evidence of English proficiency before you enter the program. For most applicants that means an accepted test such as IELTS Academic or OET at the required scores, with the minimums updated in April 2026, so refer to the current NMBA table rather than older advice. If you completed at least six years of primary and secondary schooling taught in English in a recognised country, you may qualify through the education pathway instead.
-
Compare ANMAC-accredited providers in your state. Accreditation matters because credit and registration hinge on it. TAFE Queensland, TAFE NSW, RMIT and numerous private training organisations deliver the Diploma of Nursing.
-
Apply before the intake deadline. Intakes run throughout the year, with TAFE Queensland's next starting in late September 2026 and TAFE NSW listing August and September starts. Selection tasks are part of the process, so leave yourself time.
-
Sort out funding early. Ask the provider's student services team about subsidised places and loan eligibility before you commit to a payment plan.
-
Plan around clinical placements. If you work or care for family, map the placement calendar before enrolment, not after.
Jobs and Skills Australia publishes current earning data for enrolled nurses, with the median weekly earnings for enrolled and mothercraft nurses listed at $1,618. State career sites walk through the role and typical tasks, and the AHPRA website holds the registration standards, English requirements and the list of recognised countries for the education pathway. For learners outside the capital cities, combination study has changed the game: regional students can now complete an enrolled nurse program without relocating.
Where to go from here
The gap between wanting a nursing career and holding an EN registration is smaller than most people think. Eighteen months, an accredited provider, a workable funding arrangement, and you are in a field that keeps hiring. Start with the two things you can control this week: confirm the English requirement that applies to your situation, and shortlist the ANMAC-accredited providers running intakes near you. Every state has one. The only real mistake is assuming this pathway does not exist in Australia, because it does, under a different name and with a clear route to registration.
